Gran Canaria – an island you’ll want to explore
Gran Canaria is the kind of island that keeps surprising you. I’ve always loved the fact that you can start your day with a swim in the ocean, grab a coffee on the beach, and a couple of hours later find yourself surrounded by mountains, volcanic landscapes and small villages.
Of course, there are the beaches. Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas is right on our doorstep and is one of the places that makes living here so special. You can go for a morning swim, learn to surf, take a long walk along the promenade or simply sit down and watch the ocean. And because of the island’s mild climate, you can enjoy the beach almost all year round.
But Gran Canaria is much more than beaches and sunshine. The centre of the island feels like a completely different world. There are mountains, deep valleys, pine forests, winding roads and beautiful little villages waiting to be discovered. If you enjoy hiking, there are trails with incredible views, from the coast all the way up into the mountains.
And if you’re looking for things to do in Gran Canaria, there’s plenty to choose from. Surfing, hiking, yoga, paragliding, swimming, cycling or simply exploring the island by car — you can make your days as active or as relaxed as you like.
I also love the atmosphere of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It’s a real city, not just a holiday resort. People from many different places live here, and you can feel that mix everywhere — in the food, the music, the streets and especially around Las Canteras.
One day you might spend the morning surfing and the afternoon exploring the old streets of Vegueta. Another day you might head into the mountains, have lunch in a small village and come back to the beach for sunset.
That’s what I think makes Gran Canaria so special. It’s small enough to explore, but every part of the island feels different.
And when you stay at Hi Tide Hostel in Las Palmas, you have the ocean, the city and the island’s adventures all within easy reach.
Come and explore it at your own pace. We’ll be happy to show you our favourite side of Gran Canaria
